So this was the
day I lost my triathlon virginity.
Alarm was set for 5:45, registration opened at 6:15.
Russell had advised to get to transition early and
set up, 'you may be able to choose your spot'. I think
mine was the second bike on the rack, I copied the
set up of the other competitor then walked around
trying to look the part and work out where everything
was going to happen and my routes through transition.
Back to my camping pitch (the family and I had camped
overnight) another banana, another trip to the toilet
and then on with the wetsuit and back to the race
where I met up with Paul C and Claire just putting
his new plastic fantastic stealth machine together
(we are not allowed to talk about the price of the
bike in front of Claire). Jim and Rob turned up with
a couple of old dogs they had picked up and we wandered
over to the start where we happened across Paul H
with kids, Russell, his 3 boys and his uncle Jo, Andrea
(my wife) & my kids and Kate, Martin and their
kids (camping friends), so plenty of support for the
Shires pair.
Into the water after having watched the first two
waves set off, not cold, or not colder than Liquid
Leisure anyway. And off, I started in the middle right
at the front thinking if anyone wanted to overtake
that was their problem, I would just swim as fast
as I could. On the back leg Paul and I were matched
stroke for stroke. I emerged from the swim not knowing
that Paul was just a few seconds behind.
I had opted to put my bike shoes on rather than the
professional shoes on whilst cycling method. I was
slow putting shoes on but made time on other racers
who were fiddling with straps whilst cycling. The
bike route was rolling with no major climbs and a
very fast last couple of miles, I held position, whizzed
in to transition shoes still on.
I took an hour getting my bike shoes off and running
shoes on. My feet were frozen from the bike and running
felt very odd with what felt like a 1 inch layer of
snow under my feet. I had no Idea what pace I was
running at, HR was about 165. Past the screaming grandstand
of fans and in to the second lap I felt more comfortable,
my feet had thawed. Paul H and his tribe initiated
my sprint finish about 300m from the line, again past
the screaming fans and over the line. I am now a triathlete!
Finish time 109:39
Av Speed Av Pace
Swim 12:15 2.3mph 26:17min/m
Bike 35:49 20.8mph 2:52min/m
Run 21:35 9.2mph 6:33min/m
Thanks particularly to Jim, Rob, Paul H and Russell
who made the trip over to support Paul C and Me, cheers.

I thought the race was really well organised (as big
cow events seem to be)
The swim: I was a bit disappointed with my swim time,
I’m blaming the nasty climb at turn two…
well it seemed a climb to me the amount of bodies
trying to get round the buoy in one big pile. This
was definitely the scrappiest swim I’ve ever
had (great fun)
Jo looked like he was trucking along well, when we
swam next to each other between turn 1 and 2.
T1: Just the usual post swim dizziness followed by
wet suit fight.
Bike: Was over about 2 minutes after I got into a
comfortable pace. The new steed was very twitchy and
a bit scary; I didn’t really do it justice.
I need some more time getting used to it, still a
lot faster than the old bike.
T2: Went well right up until I started for the exit,
and realised I had my orthotics in the wrong shoes!
Run: Two laps round the lake went well for me and
I was generally quite pleased with the run, despite
the feeling of running along the side of a hill the
whole way.
Thanks to everyone that came to see us race, especially
Samuel Hardy who was very enthusiastic with his cheering. |
